The web hosting industry has a sizeable impact on the environment. The average server produces the same harmful emissions as a 15 mpg SUV. A typical hosting company data center (where hundreds of servers are located) consumes on average as much electricity as 30,000 households.
Some websitehosting companies are concerned about their environmental footprint, and take action to reduce and offset their impace. These companies refer to themselves as “green” or “environmentally friendly” hosts. By selecting a “green host”, you are casting your vote for environmental responsibility in business. It is an easy way for you to ‘do the right thing’, and still get quality web hosting service.
There is not currently any official standard or benchmark that qualifies a web hosting company to claim “green” status. Hosting companies may choose their own environmentally responsible approach, and will usually proudly promote the details of their eco-friendly practices. Below are some common terms used to describe environmentally friendly hosting.
Carbon Neutral - means that a company has taken stock of their impact on the environment, and then invests in carbon offset practices to neutralize their footprint. They give back in an equal amount to what they consume.
High Efficiency Servers (aka “Green” Servers) – web server equipment designed to produce significantly less CO2 than an average server (usually about 20% less)
Carbon Offset Practices – include tree planting programs, or use of alternative energy
Carbon Credits – in the absence of “clean” energy they may purchase alternative energy credits
